Ubuntu 24.04, dubbed (Noble Numbat) is a long-term support release of Ubuntu Linux operating system expected to be released to the general public on April 2024. LTS releases are focused on a solid, and stable user experience. Ubuntu 24.04 will receive support for a period of 5 years, that’s until June 2029.
At the time of writing this article, Ubuntu 24.04 OS is available in Development release meant for testing only. Don’t run the current release available under Ubuntu Daily ISO Builds in a production environment. We shall update this post once official release is out to correctly capture features shipped in Ubuntu 24.04.
Download Ubuntu 24.04 ISO on Proxmox VE
Login to your Proxmox server and select local storage pool where ISO images are placed in, then navigate to “ISO Images” –> “Download from URL”

Paste the URL of the Ubuntu 24.04 ISO image. This will vary depending on whether you’re using this guide when final release is out.
Here we’re using daily build available at;
https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/noble-desktop-amd64.iso
Paste the link in the box to download the iso image.

Create Ubuntu 24.04 VM on Proxmox VE
Create a new VM and give it a name you want to use for the Virtual Machine.

Under the “OS” section select the ISO image downloaded, and Type of “Linux“

In System you can choose to enable “Qemu Agent” and optionally adjust other options.

Set CPU count and type if you want to modify to suit your custom needs.

Set Memory size that the VM instance will be assigned.

Click next to confirm the settings and begin VM creation. You can tick “Start after created” to automatically start the VM after creation.

Install Ubuntu 24.04 on Proxmox VE
When the machine starts, choose “Try or Install Ubuntu” to install Ubuntu Linux.

Begin OS installation by clicking on “Install Ubuntu“.

Select “English” as the language and click “Next“.

To commit the OS to disk, use “Install Ubuntu” option.

Do “Default Installation” or “Full Installation”. Either option is okay depends on your personal needs.

Agree to erase disk and install Ubuntu Linux.

Install the OS using the “Install” button.

It will begin to copy the data to disk as the OS installation progresses.

Create a new user when asked to do so. Set full names, computer name, username, and password for the user.

Once the OS is installed, detach ISO and reboot.

Choose “Ubuntu” in Grub menu to boot into the newly installed OS.

Press <Enter> key in the username to login.

You can use neofetch tool to get a good graphical presentation of OS details.
